| Quote Gotcha="Gotcha"Why do you need a graduate Sal? only asking as plenty of youngsters looking for that sort of opportunity who could do just the same job..'" Because it seems to be the minimum requirement nowadays?
People say that the students get brainwashed into thinking they will lead so much improved prosperous lives with 3 years of getting drunk under there belt, but at the same time, employers are now wanting graduates for every mundane job. Hence now why the young ones coming through feel they have to go to university, or it's shelf stacking at asda for 40 years. That is the university and governments fault for the brainwashing the young generation. (the lost Generation it will be labelled as in 50 years)
The crux of the matter is that there is just not enough real graduate jobs for the influx of people that go to university. Simple. So in that respect, you can't really blame any employer ring fencing a job opportunity for only graduates, as like I say, it's just a minimum requirement, and something as a country its a mentality we should get out of.
I really don't know why so many still want to go......oh yes I do, because a lot of them think/know they will never pay it back, so it's free education?

The more company's that change their opinion to that the better. I certainly don't look at whether someone went to Uni to take them on.

This. I was made to get a degree by my employers, day release. The part time students did about 2 hours more than us per week and didn't have a clue about the practical side. They expected to finish uni and get in a steady £40k job because that's what they'd been told they could do. Even if they had any brain cells and could get a job, there are certainly not any £40k jobs around in my industry for graduates anyway! I didn't learn anything of value whilst there - nothing I didn't know from learning on the job.
Employers need to realise that graduates are no more the finished article than school leavers and are often more easily moulded. Job experience far outweighs a learning how to write long essays.

It's a good job not all employers take this view. Rlfans would be dead on weekdays, were it not for those well-versed in the arts of slacking and timewasting. This type of talent requires nurturing and in this respect a university education cannot be surpassed.

Personally, i think the fact you are advertising, and giving an opportunity for someone to get experience is a good thing by the way.'"
Because of H&S insurance and ISO we have to have someone who is at least 18. I am looking to the future and someone who has the capacity to function at a higher level going forward.

| Sal you need to be a bit more specific "interest in databases and manufacturing".
What kind of database ability/experience do you want this person to have?

Big difference between functioning in the class room and functioning in the work place. It's amazing the number of graduates we get through because they aren't able to replicate the work they've done in the class room in to that of the work place.
I mentioned in the sin bin my sadness for those that don't fit into this country's current education system, despite being bright intelligent individuals. Probably because their particular skill set is very specific and not catered for under the current system.
It's a sad state of affairs that no longer can an individual join an organization and work their way up through the company. As that career path is no longer an option in many circumstances. Merely asking for a degree that may not even be relevant to the job, makes by blood boil even further.
We we really should get back to on the job training where ever possible. It's the best way IMO, of getting employees to the highest level. I know myself and many of my older colleagues wouldn't be where we are now were it not for the ability at the time to join at the bottom and progress through via hard work and commitment to the top. Now a degree in marine engineering or naval architecture is a must. But I can tell you from experience that it isn't the be all and end all of making it in that profession. Yet many, including employers would have you believe it is. And it's wrong.
This is not a rant, well maybe it is. And it's not specifically aimed at this thread, well it is.
It just erks me something rotten when employers constantly seek only graduates for positions. When a degree isn't even remotely required for the job.
It's just something I feel passionately about and am strongly trying to change at the powers that be. With little luck.
