Perhaps we're selling somebody else? With the development of Salter and Brown, we do seem reasonably well stocked for backs. You can never have too much depth, of course, but there are more obvious priorities. Easier to judge, when we see the whole picture, I guess.
The strange thing for me is that he'd have been a better signing for nearly everybody else, but we were the only ones in for him. His England squad call-up - obviously it was a bit of a PR stunt, to show that McNamara looks beyond the usual suspects (though his form was good at the time, no doubt), but that in itself shows that it was felt that in the wider RL world that his past could now be left in the past. Another club might think 'he's had problems elsewhere, but new leaf, clean sheet etc, he's worth a go'. For us the problems were 'here'. Do we give him a clean sheet, or is it one slip and he's gone? Any embarrassments will be magnified at Rovers, but binning him off quickly after paying £30k would not be a good look either.
It doesn't even make much sense as a 'board buy' - if we wanted a versatile keepsake of 2006/7, why let Murrell go?
