| Quote Mrs Barista="Mrs Barista"Sounds serious. How do you develop a blood clot - I know you can get a DVT on a flight for example, but not something you hear about often as an RL injury as such. Is it just a spontaneous thing? Blooming bad luck if so.'"
Most common cause is after an operation in the leg, my husband developed one after he had his cartridge trimmed in his knee (old rugby injury). He was on warfarin for 12 months and carried a card, the issue with the drug is that it thins the blood so if you are involved in an injury which involves blood loss you pose a higher risk. It thins the blood as the danger of a clot is it may reach the heart which is life threatening or the lungs.

" Being on warfarin increases the risk for bleeding. Therefore, contact sports and sports with a risk for serious injury, such as football, hockey, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, alpine skiing, or boxing should not be pursued by a person on warfarin. However, athletes such as runners, bicyclists or triathletes may be able to continue their sport" Sadly not sure you read the article correctly mate

| Not sure, but I believe Kirk Dixon had the same problem last year, out for a while.
Speedy recovery Blake, not nice to hear.

| There are various other drugs that may be as effective and could get him on the field quicker. I am currently in pot and have blood thinners to take, but they are all short term effect. The main thing is to bust the clot and then look at whether it is the result of trauma or whether long term management is needed.
It's a tough thing to happen to someone who makes a living from contact sport.

Unfortunatley the ADHD kicked in before you got to the end of the paragraph...
"Individual blood thinning treatment plans can also be designed, such as (a) a decrease in warfarin dosage a few days prior to athletic events that would otherwise put the person at increased risk for bleeding, (b) switching the athlete who should be on long-term blood thinners to low molecular weight heparin shots during the athletic season and interrupting the shots for competitions that pose a risk for bleeding, (c) stopping blood thinners during the season and accepting a higher risk for blood clots during that time, but restarting warfarin during the off season."

| A relative of mine was on Warfarin and ended up suffering internal bleeding from knocking herself in a swimming pool, ended up needing Vitamin K to thicken the blood again as her kidneys couldn't cope with the thinned blood. Not as straight forward as someone on here seems to think, especially in an impact sport like ours!!

Im not sure myself, im just wondering, is it the same as a Hematoma, or is that something completely different?.
