| Quote SaintsFan="SaintsFan"So? You always lose to us but you missed beating Wigan by a fumbled try. I can't remember how you lost to Leeds.
My point was that this isn't about defence. It's about slowing the play down. If it was about defence then we'd all be moaning about how Wire play. Except we're not moaning about that because Wire don't slow the play down; they defend well.
It is perfectly possible to have pacey, open, attacking rugby league without lying on in a gang tackle for three hours and yet STILL have good defence. Wire prove it.
Like I said, it's not the defence that people are moaning about. It's the lying on, the slowing down. Hudds did it last year to great effect (and I believe Wigan fans moaned about it as much as anyone else last season) and this year Wigan are doing it. They aren't doing it down under this season because the two refs have ensured a quicker PTB, so using Oz as justification doesn't wash this season.'"
Awww ... an attempt to promote solidarity between trolls.
"We know you've never beaten us and we basically regard you as undeserving scum. But don't worry, you're still a great side as your superb defensive record shows. Okay, Wigan have run you very close in that respect this season, but you've done it honestly and fairly, whereas Wigan, as usual, have done it by cheating. You didn't even deserve to lose to them this year - it was a dropped ball. So, all in all, you're a better club followed by better people. Just so long as you keep losing your bottle and giving us an easy ride every time our two teams play, we can move forward in our mutual understanding of how despicable Wigan really are."
The unmistakable voice of another soft get, who will promptly disappear from this board as soon as his team loses.

| As the NRL is being shown free on sky now it's been interesting to see how the refereeing of the two games is different.
Of the games i've seen they tend to let the game flow far more than we do, the number of pens awarded Leeds v Wigan was ridiculous and many other games are the same. The refs seem intent in spotting wrong doing and danger in almost every contact - players should be allowed to make the tackle and allowed to attack when they have the ball.
The thing that is ruining the game is making it all about free yards gained by penalties and not yards gained (or stopped) by good play. We are in danger of turning into RU where there are so many technical offences which are meainingless in a game of rugby.
Two obvious (amongst many) examples in the leeds game, the pens awarded against either teams for having a hand in the tackle when it was blatently clear that they were stuck between ball and arm and if they had pulled out they would have been penalised for stripping.
The same game in aus would have had half that amount and we would have seen far more rugby played - we should be letting the players get on with playing hard, agressive, fast but controlled rugby.
Players have a responsibility to hold onto the ball, part of the job of defending is to stop the player releasing the ball - I can't understand the amount of penalties awarded where the defender has a hand around the ball - he has to otherwise it gets offloaded!
This is where the focus should be.

| There is absolutely no question Wigan play open, attractive rugby with the ball in their hand.
There is also absolutely no question Wigan wrestle and effect far slower play the balls than any other team.
I guess the question is - would Wigan be able to continue do the first (which their fans are enjoying so much this season) to the same degree if every other team constantly did the second like Wigan?

I don't see why not as most of our attacking play doesn't come off the back of quick ptb's or offloads in the tackle, it comes from using runners from deep and spreading the ball wide.

That isn't the question the referees are asking. They question the referees are asking is "how can we stop them doing this, when it isn't even illegal?"

It isn't only the defence immediately around the play the ball that is given time to set itself by wrestling and holding down, it's the entire defensive line.

Have you actually watched any Wigan games. Wigan don't slow the play the ball down any more or less than any other team, if they do they get penalised like any other side. What wigan do is slow it down from the point of contact by the defender and the point when the tackle is deemed complete. That gives the defenders the extra few seconds to get set.

Quite, and it's the same question the coaches you lot moan about are asking too - because if it transpires that that is the way forward, we can look forward to some incredibly bland games of rugby to come.
It wasn't so long ago Wigan fans used to moan about Hudds/Quins etc trying to slow games down with negative defensive tactics - I wonder why it is now OK

| So basically what every other team wants is a quick play of the ball and 5 scoots and a kick, no expansive rugby or passing, just quick runs from dummy half. Yea thats very exciting

No, they want the same lattitude in attack that Wigan are allowed by other teams not taking 10 seconds to allow a play the ball, which is why they only seem to complain after Wigan games (Wigan aren't the only team that beats other teams, you do realise that don't you?)
Or are you saying Leeds don't play expansive rugby?

| The difference is that Wigan slow the tackled play before they put him on the ground. Quins & Hudds put them on the ground and messed around.
If Hetherington wants to know why the game was slow he should look at his pitch. It's the worst pitch in SL by a mile. He has a great team who can play fast open attractive rugby but they can't on that ploughed field.
Leeds management need to sort their own problems out regarding the boggy pitch slowing the game down rather than complain about others.
When Leeds came to Wigan it was they who were slow, they were slow in attack and slow in defence, Wigan were too fast for them in all aspects of the game all night. Hence they were out played and lost convincingly.
Gary Hetherington needs to focus his attention on his own club, the pitch, the slum of a ground, lousy access and no parking. It would still be a great ground if we were living in the 1960's but this is the 21st century and Headingly appears to be nothing more than an uncondemed slum!
