| From Leigh Centurions Communications Team
The club is considering a marketing exercise involving 'Legends of Leigh RLFC'. I know we have touched on this theme on a number of occasions on this website, but have never actually collated the data. The club would be grateful for nominations from the fans, on who they consider to be their heroes/most revered players, over the generations.
Please feel free to nominate your personal heroes, on this thread, and I'll gladly pass the names to the club. We are looking for about 25 nominated players.
Thanks,
Alan.
Alan,
If I understand this correctly the BOM is looking for a list of Legends covering the club's entire history. If that's the case my nomination (in no particular order) are:
1. Walt Mooney
2. Jimmy Ledgard
3. Mick Martyn
4. Trevor Allan
5 Stan Owen
6 Bill Robinson
7 Alex Murphy
8 Pete Smethurst
9 Bev Risman
10 John Woods
11 Des Drummond
12 Joe Walsh
13 Gordon Lewis
14 Mick Collins
15 Charlie Pawsey
16 Alf Wilkinson
17 Walt Tabern
18 Dave Eckersley
19 Tim Street
20 Neil Turley

Tom Coop should be on there as, I believe, he was the club's captain in 1895

That's the thing - the list has to provide that link all the way back to 1895 (and before!!) - Walt played for the club between the Wars - what about the heroes of the 1905/06 Championship winning side? or those who were at the club when war broke out?.....and what about Albert Worrall - surely anyone who plays over 500 games for the club deserves a place on the list??
And how could any list of Leigh legends be complete without Sir Tommy??

| I do.
His first game was against Dewsbury although he played under the name of Harrison for just that 1 game.
Leigh won 37 4 and coincidentally it was Jimmy Ledgards last game at Hilton Park too.

And didn't Harrison/Humble score four tries that day?

| He did and all of them at the Chadwick St end' score board corner.
31 4 HT second half was a bit of a let down.

| Found this article titled"When RugbyLeague was King of Sports"
The diminutive Des Drummond was simply Rugby League’s first Superstar and an automatic choice on the right wing for all the Great Britain teams of his era. Des’s speciality was a blistering burst of acceleration down the touchline followed by a spectacular swan dive at the corner flag. Des Drummond even appeared on the telly programme Superstars, a rare exposure for RL players at the time. He marked his appearance by feeding all other competitors a trail of dust and briefly almost made Rugby League marketable to the South of England
