| I would say a trial would be sensible for a couple of reasons
Firstly, the biggest benefit the NRL has seen from introducing two refs has been policing the play the ball which seems a lot cleaner in recent seasons with less penalties as the players know they are being watched more carefully and there are less messy play the balls. Despite having two people who can blow the whistle, I think that two refs would have a positive impact on the penalty count as all the hands in at the play the ball will disappear as the players know they will get away with zero
Also, whether we like it or not, the Aussies will not get rid of the two ref system now and we all know it is inevitable that the moaning Aussies will insist on it in international rugby soon and again we will be disadvantaged if ours players are not used to the system. This is not a reason I like but I think it needs to happen

| Yes. It's too much for the ref to try to watch both the PTB and defensive line at the sime time. The touch judges, being limited to the touchline, are often either too far away or unsighted. Far better to let one of them onto the pitch.
Headhunter, Vikingsmurf, you actually have to click the button at the top of the thread. Just writing your vote in the thead doesn't work

| Where, exactly, are the extra referees going to come from? Are they coming from the Championship? In which case, who is going to ref those games? What is the quality of the refs in the U20's? Its a good idea in practice, but we just don't have the depth in match officials.

| No. As a referee, I see absolutely no reason for it at all. We already have 3 officials at matches (more if you count in-goal and the 4th official). They're all wired up. There is nothing that an extra ref on the field would add.
For example - if we think Offside isn't being policed properly, then one touchie can remain level with the defensive line, and call a penalty to the ref if they're offside.
If we think the PTB isn't being refereed correctly, then the ref isn't doing his job.
Forward passes should be picked up by touchies, and so should incidents in play on the ref's blind side.

I agree with you that one referee and two touch judges should be enough to police a game. I do feel that it is more psychological effect on the players knowing that there is another ref specifically policing the tackle and play the ball that will have a positive effect. In the professional game in particular, there is a hand on the ball in almost every tackle, sometimes they get away and sometimes not... that may be reduced with two refs (I think it is worth a trial anyway)
Plus we have the annoying inconsistency between the Northern and Southern hemispheres – which I agree is not a reason in itself to change but I think we need to consider the international effect
p.s. I always smile when I see the name Roy Haggerty and the picture of Sir Humphrey Appleby... two very different people

One a proper qualified referee and the other one of the many "experts" from these forums!!!!

We are all expert refs AND coaches.
I remember a quote from Tommy Docherty many years ago when he managed Manchester United.
"There are 60,000 managers here every home game, and only one doesn`t know what he is doing."

yes of course, they [ushould[/u be picked up by the touch judges but they aren't !!! that's the problem !
witness the two blatant FPs given against Saints - fortunately the Leeds one didn't matter but the W***n one did - it's not that difficult to spot is it ?
or maybe the simple solution would be to allow the VR to judge the FPs ? the technology is available - just as it is for the goal-line technology in football.
