| Quote Saddened!="Saddened!"Wellens is trying to steal the ball isn't he? I've just watched it back and there is no way he intends to do that. Briers only lifts up as he digs his studs in and drives them forward. It's a nothing incident.
Laffranchi's isn't bad either. He isn't lifted high off the floor and lands on the middle of his back between his shoulder blades. In the good old days it would have been a letter about his technique and a fine. There were worse high shots that went unpunished and Morley's elbow on Perry which again has been ignored. Briers' grapple tackle on Wellens was also as bad as Wello's on Briers.'"
What a load of rubbish. If it had been our players upended on their heads you would have been bleating like mad if Wire had been let off. They were both bad tackles, regardless of whether they were deliberate or simply reckless. They both deserve bans because they both involved putting a player on their head. That is dangerous even when it's a Wire player being put on their head. (If it had been Wigan players, of course, that would have improved them no end)

| Disappointing to lose both but neither is insurmountable given that they've missing a few of their n00bs.

I'm not saying they weren't dangerous, I'm questioning the intent. You can get away with not being banned if you didn't intend to cause harm, which neither did. Someone mentioned Wellens has never been before the disciplinary committee before. Given Ryan Bailey escaped a ban about 94 times because he'd never previously been banned, I'd say it would be mighty harsh to ban him for that.
They both had until 11 this morning to register their guilty pleas, any news about that happening?

| Have they both pleaded guilty or are they going to appear before the panel of officials?

| Quote Blobbynator="Blobbynator"Bit of a blow to lose both, Wellens is proving the critics wrong (including myself) with some strong performances in recent weeks. Laffranchi has been good all season, a really astute signing.
TP in for Laffranchi isn't a problem though and hopefully Wheeler should come in to strengthen us in the backs. Makinson to step in at full back to keep the half backs the same.'"

Wellens should. I think Laffranchi would be unlucky to get a 2 match ban as well. It's his first referral here and it wasn't a bad spear. Before this season it would have been a classic 'letter about technique' case. The legs aren't lifted high and he lands on his back.

I have not seen the incidents so could not say whether there was intent or not, whether they where dangerous or not. But just because you feel they are deserving of a ban does not make it the actual penalty that will be given.
You have to take into account player records even if they are found guilty and intent is also a factor in the penalty given.
My point is Wellens has an excellent record and so will probably not recieve the full 2 matches. If there is a lack of intent, then he may not get one match. You may feel that all these types of tackles deserve a certain penalty but the justice system does not work that way.
Hence Brent webb shoving a ref which carries a 3 match ban, was found guilty, but due to a lack of intent and an excellent prior record, just got a fine. So taking this as a marker you can see why Wellens if he is found guilty may not be banned. It about what the court is likely to do not what we would do.

So if a more serious offence can be reduced to a fine due to no priors I would expect the same for Wello. I have no idea of La Franki's previous records hence can't say what mitigation he may get.
All this is based on a guilty verdict too, and they may get found not guilty.

If I were a betting man I'd put money on them both receiving no ban if they were isolated incidents. BUT with two players from the club being up and Wigan crying about their squad and trying to influence the decision, I doubt both will escape. If it's true that Wellens has never been banned before he has a decent chance. But I suspect that will mean Laffranchi cops one game.
It will be mighty interesting to see how much club bias there is on the panel this week as well, does anyone know who it is? Wigan are very often well represented.
