I do hope someone recalls what happened when someone drove a mobile crane onto the pitch to finish off the Carnegie stand - maybe laying a new pitch AFTER the southstand is built would be a stonking idea rather than the other way around ?

just done that. had to drive over a big lawn to get to a job. we simply laid 8' x 4' ply sheets and drove over them. hardly marked the lawn.

I think there was an oil or diesel spillage that did the main damage, still visible after all this time, not tracks digging up the pitch. Though you would have thought that there would have been some protection laid down to prevent damage to the turf. Torrey Canyon would have made less of an impact. Or Exxon Valdez for our younger viewers.
