You seem to be just focused on the alcohol sales and it appears that there is a common theme between at least Leeds and Manchester where alcohol sales licence restrictions have been placed because of problems. Its quite normal for other licenced outlets to object to new locations opening up and its part of the planning and licencing committees duties to consider these as part of their city centre strategy, their recommendations are taken into account together with the police opinion of crowd control/conduct.
Is your problem based on the fact that they (or is it you, what is your involvement) aren't allowed unrestricted sales of alcohol with no regard to the consequences, or is it something else ?
How about having the German Market with no alcohol sales outlet, just food and gifts, would that be acceptable to you ?

Agreed - I work literally a minutes walk from Millennium Square so most of my lunch hours are spend sampling the (limited) continental cuisine.
I've had a couple of great nights out in the beer tent with the daft Oompah Band but TBH, I wouldn't be heart broken if it was just food and gifts.

| Seems strange as the few contacts I have at my disposal, both council and magistrates say that this rule hasn't been enforced yet. What has happened is that there has been a submission from a combined number of licensed premises with a police report stating that with the market open from 11am through to close at night, they have been experiencing high levels of intoxicated individuals.
This will go to a review panel however and the questions to be asked will be:
Why are other venues allowing intoxicated patrons onto their premises? (considering the licensing law dictates that anyone believed to be intoxicated should be refused admission/service)
Also the venues involved in the complaint are bars that even at this time of year are dead, because they're terrible bars. I will be very surprised if the marlet bars are forced to close during the day as it will not surpress alcohol issues. patrons will just move to another bar and come back. I think the steins may go and move back to standard pints only and maybe more enforcement on the rules, so drunken groups maybe asked to vacate after a period of time.
Personally I love the market, has a really good buzz in the lead up to Christmas. Nothing better than finishing work, going for a few pints and a bit of sausage and then moving on. Couldn't be d staying there all night though.

I will assume you don't drink at all in the city centre anymore then? £3.50 for a pint of lager is about standard
